Primary Care for HIV/AIDS

Since 1998, Legacy has specialized in HIV/AIDS primary healthcare. Nationally recognized as a leader in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, Legacy has created a comprehensive set of services for people living with HIV/AIDS. In addition to primary care, our services include eye care, medication adherence counseling, educational workshops, and prevention counseling.

Legacy’s multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals includes physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, prevention counselors, and more. Together, they deliver compassionate quality care that strives to achieve optimal health. Our HIV primary healthcare services are designed to meet the specific needs of each of our HIV-positive patients.

We accept Medicaid, Medicare and many health insurance plans.

Most HIV-positive persons without health coverage qualify for free services with funding awarded to Legacy through the federal Ryan White CARE Act.

The doctors and nurse practitioners have extensive experience with the special needs of those living with HIV. Services include:

- Primary Health Care: basic care for all your health needs
- Physical Exams: regular check-ups to monitor your health
- Routine Blood Work: including immune system functions and viral load
- Prescriptions: for HIV antiviral drugs, antibiotics, and other medications
- HIV medication education: learn about medications and ways to avoid side effects
- STD Screening and Treatment: get tested and treated while learning how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases
- Vaccinations: against Hepatitis A and B, flu shots
- X-ray services: including chest X-rays to diagnose TB or pneumonia

Additional programs and services for HIV-positive patients in primary care:

Next Step: This educational workshop is designed for persons newly diagnosed with HIV. Topics include immune system functions, safer sex, stress management, medical treatments, and referrals to community organizations

Social Services: Ryan White patients are eligible to receive case management, which helps to remove language and transportation barriers, provides referrals to other services, and works with patients to improve medication adherence.

Prevention Services: Legacy offers two programs to help persons living with HIV/AIDS disclose their HIV status, reduce stress and learn ways to negotiate safer sex. Positive Options is one-on-one; Healthy Relationships is in a group setting.

Financial Assistance: Legacy helps cover the costs of HIV medications, ancillary medications and co-pays for Ryan White-eligible, uninsured patients. We also help cover COBRA payments for insured persons living with HIV/AIDS who have lost their job.

Eye Care: Our licensed doctors offer both optometry and ophthalmology services including comprehensive eye examinations, disease screening and diagnosis, and prescription eyewear (glasses and contact lenses).

Psychiatry and Counseling: Certified to treat both adolescents and adults, Legacy’s team of mental health professionals can help with a variety of emotional, relationship, and behavioral issues.

Wellness Services: Designed to help our patients regain physical strength, combat medication side effects, and control pain through exercise, our wellness services include: nutritional counseling and personal training.
