Legacy Statement on the American Health Care Act

By: Kevin Nix, Senior Director of Communications

As state’s largest community health center, our goal is to get more low-income Texans insured so they can afford to see the doctor for primary and preventative care. Yet the new American Health Care Act, unveiled earlier this week, seems to directly work against this goal. By freezing Medicaid spending for the most vulnerable among us, including pregnant women, children, and the disabled, fewer patients will be insured.  The proposal is bad for Texas, already the nation’s capital for the uninsured. From a public health perspective, and a moral one, we oppose the proposal as drafted. We look forward to working with members of Congress to make it more patient-centered.
