Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak Update
As a frontline provider of health care throughout the year, Legacy Community Health plays a critical role during public health emergencies. This is a frightening, uncertain time for many in our communities, especially those in vulnerable situations. Please be assured that we at Legacy are monitoring the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19), and are being proactive in our preparations to handle any cases that walk through our doors.
As of Monday morning, patient screeners have been placed at the entrance of all Legacy clinics. Satellite Clinics are being opened at four sites over the course of the week to assist in COVID-19 screening and testing. These satellite clinics are located in tents adjacent to our three busiest clinics in Houston (Legacy Fifth Ward, Legacy Montrose, and Legacy Southwest) and Beaumont (Legacy Central Beaumont).
Patients who screen positive for COVID-19 symptoms will be redirected to one of our Satellite Clinics for free testing, and our staff has received a detailed workflow that outlines how patient care will be administered.
Legacy’s Contact Center continues to answer all calls regarding COVID-19, and transfers possible cases to our triage team at Legacy Montrose. This qualified team of nurses and patient educators is working to address patient concerns and provide education on the best strategies for staying healthy.
We are taking every step to transition in-person patient appointments to treatment via telemedicine. This will help us to better protect staff, as well as healthy and vulnerable patients from potential exposure to COVID-19. Telephone visits for primary care services will begin Tuesday, March 17th, for pre-selected patients, and telehealth visits for our Behavioral Health patients will start Wednesday, March 18th.
Our Community is Our Strength
“Legacy has a long history of dealing with pandemics, and we will use this experience as we tackle the coronavirus,” says CEO Katy Caldwell. “We are already screening and testing patients, and will remain at the forefront of efforts to educate the public and control the spread of this virus.”
Chief Medical Officer Vian Nguyen adds, “Our patient-facing staff is working diligently to ensure the health of our community, and we are extremely grateful for their continued dedication. Beginning this week, certain non-patient facing employees are being equipped and empowered to work from home, and we have asked all staff to refrain from business travel or conferences through at least March 31st. Our goal is to lower the probability of the spread of COVID-19 for our staff and the community around us.”
Legacy’s top priority remains the health and safety of our patients, staff, and families. We encourage everyone to help us keep the community safe by staying calm, educating themselves, and doing their part to prevent the spread of the virus. This is a time for everyone to heed the advice of medical professionals by practicing social distancing, making healthy choices, and doing all they can to “flatten the curve.”
How You Can Help
This is an ongoing, constantly changing situation, so philanthropic support is more valuable than ever as it provides Legacy with the financial flexibility necessary to react new circumstances as they arise. If you are able, please consider a making a monetary donation to support our patients who cannot afford to pay for their own care out of pocket.
As of now, all Legacy locations are open and operating during normal business hours, and our staff is doing all they can to help our patients remain calm and prepare. We need your help to continue responding to this crisis, and to continue driving healthy change in our communities.
