Recognition highlights her leadership in improving maternal health outcomes, expanding access to care, and supporting healthier futures for women and families across Houston
HOUSTON, TX (August 20, 2026) – Dr. Erica Giwa, medical director of obstetrics and gynecology at Legacy Community Health, has been named a 2026 Houston Business Journal Women Who Mean Business honoree in health care. The recognition honors women whose leadership is creating meaningful impact across Houston.
For more than 15 years, Dr. Giwa has worked to improve maternal health outcomes, expand access to care, and help more women and families achieve healthier futures. She oversees women’s health and prenatal care programs at Legacy Community Health, one of the largest Federally Qualified Health Centers in Texas.
As a Houston OB-GYN physician and maternal health leader, Dr. Giwa has dedicated her career to improving care for women and families. Through her clinical leadership, advocacy, and commitment to expanding access, she has helped advance maternal health and pregnancy outcomes across Houston and Harris County.
As medical director of OB/GYN at Legacy Community Health, one of the largest Federally Qualified Health Centers in Texas and a national leader in prenatal care, Dr. Giwa helps oversee programs that support women before, during, and after pregnancy. Her work reflects Legacy’s commitment to comprehensive, coordinated care that helps families achieve healthier outcomes.
Throughout her career, Dr. Giwa has championed innovative approaches to maternal health care. Guided by a philosophy of identifying challenges early and acting quickly, she has helped shape programs and clinical practices that expand access to care and improve outcomes for mothers and babies.
“In Harris County, where many families face barriers to care, Dr. Giwa has distinguished herself as a leader who turns insight into action,” said Dr. Tamisha Jones, chief medical officer at Legacy Community Health. “Her commitment to innovation and her determination to improve outcomes for mothers and babies continue to strengthen maternal health care across our community.”
Dr. Giwa’s commitment to service extends beyond Legacy through her involvement in community, educational, and global initiatives. More recently, she has supported All Children Count, a nonprofit organization in Ethiopia focused on English-language education and teacher training, reflecting her dedication to strengthening communities through education and opportunity.
She is also a respected voice on maternal health in Houston, frequently engaging with community and health care audiences on ways to improve outcomes for women and families. Her advocacy continues to help advance conversations around maternal health and access to care throughout the region.
Dr. Giwa will be honored at the Houston Business Journal’s 2026 Women Who Mean Business Awards Luncheon on October 15, 2026 at the Hilton Americas-Houston. The annual awards program recognizes influential women leaders who are shaping Houston’s business and professional communities.
“It is an honor to be recognized among such an extraordinary group of women leaders,” said Dr. Giwa. “This recognition reflects the dedication of the patients, colleagues, and teams I have the privilege of working alongside every day. I remain committed to advancing maternal health and expanding access to care so more women and families can build healthier futures. When women thrive, communities thrive.”
