HIV & STI testing

A test is the only way to know your HIV status. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sometimes called STDs, may not cause symptoms.

  • Cost: No-cost HIV testing is available at participating locations. Other testing and costs vary by service and eligibility.
  • Results: Ask when and how you will receive your results. If you need follow-up, our team can connect you to more testing or treatment.
  • Symptoms: Call (832) 548-5000 for help booking an exam. A screening-only visit may not meet your needs.

This pilot is for uninsured patients without symptoms. The current schedule is Tuesdays and Fridays, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM. Testing may include chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis, HIV and syphilis.

HIV & STI prevention

PrEP is medicine for people without HIV. Taken as prescribed, it greatly reduces the chance of getting HIV. A provider will review your health, arrange testing and help you choose an option.

PrEP and HIV injection options

DoxyPEP is a prescription antibiotic used after sex to help prevent certain bacterial STIs in eligible patients. It does not prevent HIV or other viral infections. Ask a provider whether it is right for you.

Your care team and Legacy’s Pharmacy PrEP Program can help coordinate lab testing, prescription refills and follow-up visits. Keep the testing and visit schedule your provider recommends.

Contact your care team or pharmacy before your medicine runs out. If you miss a visit or have trouble paying for medicine, ask your team for help continuing PrEP.

Have insurance?

Legacy accepts many insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and commercial plans. Confirm your specific plan and service when booking, and bring your insurance card. Check accepted insurance plans.

No insurance or worried about cost?

Legacy sees patients without insurance. Depending on your service and eligibility, assistance programs or fees based on income and family size may be available. Ask what your visit, lab tests and medicine may cost.

What should I bring?

Requirements vary by program. Ask which income, identity or address documents you need. For a sliding-fee assessment, Legacy allows you to report your income and family size yourself. If paperwork is difficult to obtain, tell the eligibility team.

The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program may help eligible people living with HIV pay for medical care, medicines and support services. Income and local program requirements apply.

Having insurance does not automatically rule out help if your coverage leaves gaps. Legacy’s eligibility team can review your situation and explain which services may be covered.

Other help may be available

For PrEP or HIV medicines, ask about copay assistance or patient assistance programs. Options depend on your medicine, coverage and program eligibility.

Before your visit

  1. Choose a visit. Book online where available, or call for help. New patients can ask Health Navigation to explain the next steps.
  2. Prepare for check-in. Ask what to bring and what you may need to pay. Tell us if you need help with coverage or costs.
  3. Make your care plan. Your provider will discuss your needs and any tests, medicine or follow-up. Ask how you will receive results and who to contact with questions.

These visits are recommended to help you get started and understand costs, but they are not required before booking a provider visit. Tell the team if you want to book directly. Financial assistance programs may still require an eligibility review before help is approved.

If you already receive care at Legacy, ask your team about your next visit and whether any eligibility information needs updating.
