Everything Legacy Patients Need to Know About the New Wegovy Daily Pill

GLP-1 injectable medications have helped millions of Americans manage their weight over the past few years. Now, there is another option for patients who want the benefits of GLP-1s without the needle – the FDA has approved a once-daily pill version of Wegovy, and it is now available across America.

At Legacy Community Health, we want to make sure our patients have the information they need to make informed decisions about their health. If you’ve been curious about GLP-1 medications or have been hesitant about trying an injectable option, this new pill form might be worth discussing with your health care provider and our pharmacy team.

What Is the Wegovy Pill?

The Wegovy pill is the first oral GLP-1 medication approved specifically for weight loss in adults. It contains the same active ingredient, semaglutide, that has been available in the injectable version since 2021. The difference is simple: instead of a weekly injection, you take one pill every morning.

The pill targets the same appetite and fullness pathways as the injection, reducing hunger and helping people eat less without feeling constantly hungry. One notable difference is that the pill contains higher doses of semaglutide than the injection. This is because this type of medication does not absorb as easily when swallowed compared to when it is injected, so the pill needs a higher dose to deliver the same results.

This medication is prescribed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It is for adults living with obesity, or for those who are overweight and have at least one weight-related medical condition such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, or cardiovascular disease. It’s for long-term weight management, not short-term or cosmetic weight loss, and works best when combined with nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral changes.

How Well Does It Work?

Clinical trials have shown promising results. Both the oral and injectable forms contain semaglutide and have similar effectiveness and safety profiles. In the OASIS 4 study, participants who took the Wegovy pill achieved an average weight loss of approximately 14 percent of their body weight over about 15 months.

For those who remained on the medication for the full duration while following a reduced-calorie diet and exercising, the average weight loss reached approximately 17 percent.

To put this in perspective, if you weigh 235 pounds, a 14 percent reduction would mean losing about 33 pounds, which is about the same as what patients see with the injectable version. So if you have been hesitant about the needle, you can expect comparable results with the pill.

Why Some Patients May Prefer the Pill

For many people, the idea of a daily pill feels more familiar and less intimidating than a weekly injection.

There are practical advantages as well. Unlike the injectable pens, the Wegovy pill does not require refrigeration. This makes it much easier to travel with, since you will not need special storage or letters explaining your medication when going through security or crossing borders. For patients with busy lives, a pill that fits into a morning routine may simply feel like less of a hassle than managing injectable pens.

That said, the pill is not the right fit for everyone. If you take several medications in the morning, have a sensitive stomach, or are already on an injectable GLP-1 for type 2 diabetes, the injection might actually be the better option for you. Ultimately, the best choice comes down to your health history, your lifestyle, and an honest conversation with your provider.

How Do You Take It?

Taking the Wegovy pill requires following a specific routine for the best results. You should take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, no more than four ounces. After swallowing the pill whole, you need to wait at least 30 minutes before eating breakfast, drinking coffee or other beverages, or taking any other oral medications. This timing ensures nothing interferes with the medication’s absorption.

Your health care provider will start you on the 1.5 mg dose and gradually increase it over time, with adjustments happening approximately every 30 days until you reach the maintenance dose of 25 mg. This approach helps your body adjust and can minimize side effects.

What About Side Effects?

Like all medications, the Wegovy pill can cause side effects. The most common ones are gastrointestinal issues, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation. These side effects tend to be most noticeable when you first start the medication or when your dose increases, and they often improve as your body adjusts. Staying hydrated and eating smaller meals can help during this adjustment period.

Staying hydrated is especially important while taking this medication. If you experience persistent symptoms, contact your health care provider right away.

Before you start, make sure to talk with your provider about your personal and family medical history. If you or a close family member has a history of thyroid cancer (specifically medullary thyroid carcinoma) or MEN 2, a rare inherited condition that causes tumors to grow in the endocrine glands, this medication may not be right for you.

What Does It Cost?

The Wegovy pill comes at a significantly lower price point than the injectable version, which previously cost around $1,000 per month. For patients paying out of pocket, the starting dose costs approximately $149 per month, which works out to about $5 per day.

  • Patients with commercial insurance that covers Wegovy may pay as little as $25 per month through the Wegovy Commercial Savings Offer, with savings capped at $100 for a one-month supply, $200 for a two-month supply, and $300 for a three-month supply. Eligibility requirements apply, and our pharmacy team will assist in enrolling all eligible patients.
  • For patients whose commercial insurance does not cover Wegovy, or who are paying out of pocket, our pharmacy staff provide assistance with self-pay offers, pricing options, and savings programs. Self-pay prices vary by strength and quantity. In some cases, the cash pay prices at NovoCare pharmacy may be more competitive, and our team can help you explore that option as well.

What Patients Are Asking About the Wegovy Pill

Is the Wegovy Pill Available at Legacy Pharmacy Right Now?

Yes. Legacy Pharmacy is currently stocking the Wegovy pill in all four available strengths. At this time, there are no delays, shortages, or wholesaler backorders. Once a patient’s insurance claim is successfully processed or self-pay is confirmed, our team fills the prescription. If an order needs to be placed, the medication typically arrives the next business day.

What Is the Process for Getting Started?

Once your provider sends a Wegovy prescription to a Legacy Pharmacy, our team handles the entire process from start to finish. We verify your insurance coverage or determine self-pay eligibility, and our MAAT team works to obtain insurance approval when needed. After a paid claim or confirmed self-pay request, we fill the prescription and arrange delivery. A Legacy pharmacist will then counsel you on dosing, what to expect, side effects, and follow-up. Patients can choose free delivery or shipment to their home, or opt for in-pharmacy or curbside pickup.

How long will I need to stay on it?

Oral Wegovy is intended for long-term weight management. Like other chronic conditions, stopping treatment often leads to weight regain, so most patients remain on the medication ongoing with provider oversight.

What Else Does Legacy’s Pharmacy Do?

Dedicated staff handles prior authorizations and appeals, and our Clinical Pharmacy Specialists are trained in chronic disease and weight-management care, meaning they can assess patients, adjust therapy, and provide ongoing follow-ups over time. We also offer flexible communication through phone, text, email, and the RxLocal app, so patients can reach us in whatever way works best for them.

Common Misconceptions About Weight Loss Medications

  • “It’s the easy way out.” Obesity is a chronic, biologically driven disease. GLP-1 medications work by addressing the hormonal pathways involved in appetite regulation. That is not a shortcut; it is treatment.
  • “I can stop once I reach my goal weight.” Like many chronic conditions, stopping treatment often leads to weight regain. Most patients remain on the medication long-term with provider oversight.
  • “It’s unsafe because it’s new.” While the pill is newer, semaglutide itself has been studied extensively and has an established safety profile when used appropriately.
  • “It replaces diet and exercise.” Medication supports behavior change. It does not replace it. GLP-1s work best alongside sustainable lifestyle changes.
