Real Care for Your Child, Right From Home

For many Houston-area families, scheduling a child’s doctor’s appointment is only half the battle. The real challenge is actually getting there.

Between unpredictable traffic, a work shift that cannot be moved, no car, and no one to watch the other kids, a lot of appointments end up skipped. And when it comes to a child’s mental health, a missed appointment is not just an inconvenience. It can be a real setback that snowballs over time.

Legacy Community Health’s pediatric telehealth services were built with exactly these families in mind, and right now, they are more accessible than ever.

What Is Telehealth, and How Does It Actually Work?

Telehealth is a live video visit with a real doctor or therapist, conducted through your phone, tablet, or computer. It is not a chatbot, and it is not an AI pulling answers from a database. It is a licensed medical professional who can see your child, ask the right questions, assess their needs, and provide real care, right through the screen.

Scheduling is straightforward through Legacy MyChart or by calling (832) 548-5000. Patients must be physically in Texas at the time of the visit, and a parent or guardian must be present with the child.

Legacy pediatrician Dr. Brittany Hodgson says telehealth has become one of the most practical tools she offers her patients:

“A telehealth appointment is a convenient way to check in with a clinician when your child is sick, but maybe not so sick that they need an in-person visit. For colds and runny noses, I have parents schedule telehealth visits with me to get refills of ibuprofen and acetaminophen and make sure that they are up to date on what cold remedies they can use for their kids. It’s also a great way to follow up on more chronic problems such as allergies or eczema. We really try to work with families to make sure that we provide great care for our patients while also being convenient.”

Why Behavioral Health Is at the Center of This

When school is in session, many children receive mental health support through school-based clinics. But summer breaks, holidays, and unexpected school closures create a gap that is easy to overlook and hard on kids who depend on that consistent care.

Children’s emotional needs do not pause when the school year ends. Anxiety, depression, and behavioral challenges can actually intensify without the structure of a school day, making continuous support more important, not less.

Legacy’s behavioral health team includes licensed counselors and therapists who work with children from elementary school through high school. Sessions are available in both English and Spanish. Many kids who resist an in-person visit are far more comfortable opening up when they are at home in a familiar space, and that comfort can make all the difference in how well therapy actually works.

AI Is Not a Substitute for Real Therapy

As access to professional care has gotten harder for some families to navigate, more parents and teens have turned to AI tools for emotional support. While AI can answer general questions, it cannot do what a trained therapist does.

It cannot diagnose, build a relationship, track a child’s progress over months, or adjust treatment based on what is actually happening in that child’s life. A real provider who knows your child is what makes lasting progress possible.

“It worries me as I see more and more children relying on AI chatbots to diagnose and manage their mental health,” Dr. Hodgson said. “AI chatbots are not trained therapists or psychologists who can accurately diagnose or manage mental health concerns.”

She says that while they may seem to provide emotional support and some basic information, they ultimately can lead to emotional dependence, worsen loneliness and social isolation, generate misinformation, and reinforce unhealthy or even dangerous behaviors.

“Instead of an AI chatbot, we recommend setting up an appointment with our trained therapists,” she said.

What Else Can Pediatric Telehealth Handle?

Legacy’s pediatric telehealth program also covers sick visits, follow-up appointments, and a range of general wellness needs. If your child’s provider determines an in-person visit is necessary, they will let you know. Many routine concerns, though, can be handled entirely from home.

Dr. Hodgson wishes more families knew how much can be taken care of through a video visit.

“Beyond minor illnesses, we can discuss behavior concerns and lab results and give counseling on healthy eating and exercise recommendations,” she explains. “We can provide certain types of school letters as well. Appointments are easy to make and often take less of our patients’ valuable time than coming into the clinic.”
